Reflecting on the first year of my term as NTA President, I came on board embracing the mantle of leadership to guide this organization, and quickly found the voyage to be exhilarating, enlightening, and at times challenging. In the first few weeks of my administration, we navigated through a stretch of turbulent waters and I learned firsthand what I may have not appreciated before taking the helm – that NTA is blessed with a dedicated, hard-working board and officers, and with equally dedicated and committed members who do yeomen’s work to allow the NTA to keep on keeping on. I have been inspired! Change is imperative! Many hands make work light. NTA needs your help and engagement.
Now into my second year I am appealing to you, the entire NTA family – members past, present, and future – to help reinvigorate our organization.

Established nearly a century ago by African Americans to confront discrimination and unequal opportunity, NTA remains on course, providing support and lending a voice for minorities who are pursuing technical careers. Today nearly half of all NTA professional members are women, a testimony to our work throughout the years in support of excellence and diversity in America.
This is an exciting time in the history of the National Technical Association, Inc.! Having just celebrated our 90th anniversary, NTA is now one decade shy of a century old – a long time to have been providing service to minority technical communities. It is humbling to serve as President of such a venerable organization.
NTA continues today to serve minority communities and technical professions in a variety of ways. Most visibly, we host our annual convention. We provide working professionals and would-be professionals with a critical network – names and faces of like-minded individuals who serve as mentors and who share information and opportunities. Less visible but just as important, NTA and NTA members consult with decision makers in private industry and in government, advising and advocating, helping business and governmental agencies become more diverse and inclusive. As we look forward, we need to continue these activities, and to envision new ways to support minorities in a rapidly changing world.
As we approach our 100th birthday, we need to reinvigorate our organization, to broaden our vision of how we can encourage, inspire, and support women, minorities and youth in technical professions. We need to call for new members, and to invite current members to redouble their support for our cause. One way to participate in the renewal of NTA is to share your thoughts and concerns, your ideas and suggestions and proposals.
To facilitate this much needed discussion, I invite NTA members to serve as guest writers in this space. This is an open invitation to members to submit a letter or a short essay for publication here, in the president’s message column. Or, submit your ideas for an essay, or contact me to discuss the messages you would like to espouse or to see espoused in this space. For NTA to prosper, we need an infusion of energy and ideas. This is an opportunity for members to share their thoughts on current issues in technical fields, and especially issues of concern to minorities who work in – or who aspire to work in – technical fields.
